Context & challenges

In response to rising LNG imports in North-West Europe, Gasunie and Vopak took the Final Investment Decision (FID) on 23 August 2023 for the GATE terminal expansion, including the construction of a 4th 180,000 m³ tank and the addition of +4 bcm/year of regasification capacity.
Already fully contracted for the long term, this new capacity is expected to enter service in H2 2026, strengthening the regional security of supply.

Technical challenges & responses

  • Operating port site: works and tie-ins executed within an active terminal, with phased execution to avoid disrupting operations.
  • Multi-party integration: the tank is delivered by the Entrepose/VINCI JV, while Sener is in charge of interconnections to existing facilities (process, regas), and Sacyr Proyecta acts as owner’s engineer.
  • Full containment design (9% Ni inner tank + concrete containment) aligned with the international standards applied by the selected partners.
